Marrakesh — Imlil — High Atlas
The last trip of our Erasmus. Three days, a riad in the medina where the nights dropped to three degrees, and one day up in the High Atlas. We had no idea what to expect from Marrakesh. It turned out to be pure chaos, in the best way.

Day one
The Berber market
In the souks a friendly man offered to show us a Berber market. “The streets of Marrakesh are a maze,” he kept saying. After a while I noticed we were walking in circles. When we stopped, friendly turned into “pay me, or you’ll have a problem.” It cost us a hundred dirhams.

Jemaa el-Fna
Snake charmers, monkeys, horse carriages and a man selling false teeth. We still don’t know why.

Lunch guest
She got more of my tagine than I did.

The souvenir
Haggling
My Moroccan hoodie started at 350 dirhams and ended at 270. I still think I overpaid. Two shops down, the same hoodie started at 450. Haggling here is a sport, and honestly quite fun.

High Atlas
Snow in Africa
We didn’t expect snow in Africa. Imlil sits at about 1,740 m, under Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 m. Our guide said around five thousand Berbers live here, with a single doctor. Poor, he said, but simple and without stress.

First time on a camel
Probably the last. I’d rather see them free than tied in a line.

The ride
Nobody told him
In Imlil we picked up a man who just wanted a ride back to Marrakesh. Nobody told him about the camels. Two minutes into the ride he asked how long it would take. “About an hour.” He grabbed his head and we couldn’t stop laughing.

From the rooftop
On our last evening the sun went down right behind the palms of the Bahia Palace.
